overview

We will commence our hiking excursion from the village of Neoxori, where we will traverse a small portion of an asphalt road before reaching the starting point of an ancient shepherd path.

The path has been utilized in the past by locals for their day-to-day activities.

This trail, enveloped by a forest of cypress, evergreen, and old olive trees, will constitute the bulk of our journey. At the midpoint of our route, we will encounter an old “stani” stone sheepfold and appreciate the craft of stone masonry.

Subsequently, we will proceed to the toponym “Vagelinia,” an area situated across from Ithaca, to savor the breathtaking vista.

The view of Ithaca from the northern part of Kefalonia Island is a spectacular sight to behold. As one gazes out from the elevated vantage point, the panoramic view of the Ionian Sea, dotted with small islets and anchored by the majestic silhouette of Ithaca in the distance, is truly awe-inspiring.

The view is particularly breathtaking during sunset when the warm hues of the sun blend with the cool blues of the sea and the sky, creating an enchanting spectacle of nature. The view of Ithaca from northern Kefalonia is one of the island’s most iconic sights, attracting tourists and nature enthusiasts from all over the world who come to admire the beauty of this unique natural wonder.

Our return trip will be facilitated by a dirt road, mostly shaded, until we reach a small family vineyard.

The vineyard has been in operation for over five decades. Here, we will discuss the viniculture of Kefalonia.

Our hiking expedition will culminate in an olive grove located in the village, where we will engage in a conversation on the treatment of olive trees and indulge in a local picnic.

The northern region of Kefalonia is renowned for its vast forests dominated by cypress trees. The serene and tranquil surroundings of these forests offer a captivating retreat from the bustle of urban life. The cypress trees, with their striking green foliage and distinctive fragrance, provide a majestic ambiance that is both refreshing and invigorating. The area’s natural beauty, combined with the calming ambiance of the cypress trees, creates an ideal atmosphere for relaxation, reflection, and rejuvenation.

The forests of northern Kefalonia are not only visually stunning but also have significant ecological value. The cypress trees, which are indigenous to the region, serve as a habitat for a diverse range of flora and fauna, including rare and endangered species. The forests are also critical to the local ecosystem, providing a range of ecological services such as carbon sequestration, soil conservation, and water regulation. In addition to their ecological significance, the forests offer a peaceful retreat for nature lovers and hikers who can explore the area’s hiking trails and enjoy the stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
